Harrison’s

Cocktail bar
Balham

Those of you with long memories may recall our visit to Balham bistro Harrison’s earlier this year, where we enjoyed some truly epic steak and delicious dessert. We also got to take a sneaky peek at their basement bar which was refurbished earlier this year, so it seemed only right that we ventured back to sample the cocktail menu in the New York-style speakeasy.

Hidden away beneath the main dining room is a cosy basement with exposed brickwork walls, leather-upholstered booths and a shiny, well-stocked bar. Beneath ground, with no windows, it’s impossible to keep track of time; hours can easily pass by in the blink of an eye alongside Balham’s well-dressed young population. Time flies when you’re having cocktails!

As we’ve come to expect from a venue owned by Sam Harrison (also the owner of Sam’s Brasserie in Chiswick), the drinks here are first class. Despite being a small venue, the bar still stocks everything your imagination could wish for, including our summer 20131 favourite, Aperol. Service is very friendly and polite, with bar staff who really knows their drinks.

It’s always nice to have a nibble alongside your drinks, and the bar menu contains something for everyone, from delicate bites like the wild boar scotch eggs and salt and pepper squid, to more substantial nourishment, like the charcuterie board and our personal favourite, the lamb and chorizo burger. Harrison's basement bar is open Tuesday to Saturday from 6pm, so pull up a seat and make a night of it. Just don’t blame us if you lose track of time…
